The kitchen we started from
A transitional kitchen with white shaker cabinets, grey speckled granite counters, and a 4-inch granite splash-back with painted wall above it. Nothing is damaged; it is just dated and the granite lip breaks the run.
What the redesign is for
Change the band between counter and uppers so the granite reads as intentional rather than as the previous decade, without a tiler and without a weekend of grout.
What changed, and why it works
01The band above the counter
A warm-white ceramic-look peel-and-stick in a running-bond pattern, run from the granite lip to the underside of the uppers. Warm white rather than bright white, because it has to sit beside grey granite without making the granite look blue.
02The existing granite lip stays and is worked with
Starting the new surface on top of the lip rather than trying to remove it is the difference between an afternoon and a wall repair. The lip becomes a deliberate shadow line.
03Hardware brought into the same temperature
Polished nickel pulls tie the cool granite to the warm splash. This is a small purchase doing structural work in the palette.

The granite counters
They stay. Replacing granite is a five-figure decision with a template appointment and a fabrication lead time; this project is an afternoon with a utility knife.
The cabinets
White shaker is already the most forgiving surface in the room, and it is what lets a warm-white splash read as a deliberate choice rather than as a mismatch.
Outlets and switches
Cut around them; do not move them. Relocating an outlet turns a no-permit afternoon into electrical work, and the cuts are the fiddly part of the job either way.

Does peel-and-stick backsplash last behind a stove?
Behind a gas hob, treat the area directly above the burners as unsuitable — heat and grease lift adhesive. Many people run a real tile or a stainless panel in that one section and peel-and-stick everywhere else, which is a perfectly legitimate solution rather than a compromise.
Will it damage the wall when I remove it?
On painted drywall, expect to touch up paint and occasionally to skim a patch. It is reversible in the sense that it comes off, not in the sense that the wall is untouched — worth knowing before you commit if you rent.
