Getting a quote you can actually compare

The short answer

Three contractors quoting three different jobs is not three quotes — it is three guesses. The way to get comparable numbers is to hand every one of them the same written scope: what changes, what stays, what you are buying yourself, and which measurements are still unconfirmed.

What we do and do not do

KitchenDecorate has no contractor partner network. We do not collect your details, we do not pass them to a lead broker, and we will never tell you that contractors have been contacted when they have not been. No lead storage and no contractor partner are configured, so this site does not collect contact details for quotes at all.

What we can do is the part most homeowners find hardest: writing the brief. The builder below produces a document you download or copy, and you send it to whoever you choose.

What belongs in a kitchen brief

  1. 01The scope, stated as changes

    "Tile the backsplash from the counter to the underside of the uppers, cutting around four outlets" beats "redo the backsplash". A quote is only as precise as the sentence it answers.

  2. 02What is staying

    Listing what does not change is as important as listing what does. It stops a contractor pricing in a cabinet replacement you never wanted.

  3. 03Who buys the materials

    Say it explicitly. Supply-and-fit and labour-only are different numbers, and comparing one against the other is the most common reason quotes look wildly different.

  4. 04Your budget band, not a secret

    Withholding the budget wastes everybody’s time. A band lets a contractor tell you early whether the job is feasible at that number.

  5. 05The measurements you have and the ones you do not

    Being honest about what is unconfirmed is better than supplying a number you guessed. Every quote should be conditional on a site visit anyway.

  6. 06Constraints

    Renting, no electrical work, a building with restricted hours, a lease clause. These change the job, and they change it before the quote rather than after.
